On the 8th December, the three gaurs were stuck in a three sided compounded area since morning near Khed-shivapur. The fourth side was open but there was heavy highway traffic and several people had gathered.
“When we first arrived at the spot we surveyed the land and realized that the only safe escape route for the gaurs was across the highway”, said Harshad Nagare, member of the RESQ first response team.
Bhor Forest Department officers, RESQ Charitable Trust Pune and local rescuers with the Highway Traffic Police worked in sync to halt the traffic for 15 mins.
“All teams were in coordination, the public was kept at bay and and we were ready to mobilize the gaurs and stop the traffic to make a path across the highway for the gaurs” said DCF Asha Bhong Sub division Bhor.
One team carefully drove the gaurs in the right direction and they crossed the highway safely and swiftly went away into a nearby forested area and disappeared out of sight!
“The moment when we received radio communication form our team that the Gaurs were moving – there was absolute silence on the highway and everyone watched as the gaurs gracefully went across to the fields adjoining the forest land” said Neha Panchamia, founder and president RESQ Charitable Trust, Pune.
