Not just for Misal Pav, Mastani or for Amrut Tulyas, but Pune is equally known for the bakeries also! Apart from the famous 2 or 3 brands, Punekars are not quite aware of the long list of these legendary bakeries that have been baking goodies since decades now! Today, we would like to share quite a few bakeries that are still going strong and have a huge fan following and as a Punekar, you must know them all!
They all are unique and a part of Pune’s culinary heritage. Some of them are famous for laadi Pav, some for cookies, a few for cream rolls, Naans, sliced breads, walnut cake and what not. Every visit to these places invokes memories associated with sweet, vanilla and yeast-y aromas. Let’s hit the list now;
- Ramsar Bakery- Since 1935: Located on Shivajinagar right next to the Pune Municipal Corporation, Ramsar Bakery is run by an Irani family. Famous for its soft breads and buns, regulars swear by their birthday cakes as well. This is a landmark bakery located on Shivaji Road and a must visit too! Also they deliver through Swiggy and Zomato.
- Husseny Bakery- Since 1932: For the best burger buns in town, Husseny Bakery is the safest bet in Pune. Apart from their Burger Buns, Twisted Khari, cookies, Toast variety, etc are hot sellers here. If you are looking for European style dinner rolls, this is the place to get them all! Palak Khari, Marble Cake, Pita Bread and Brazilnut Biscuits are the unique items here that makes Husseny Bakery stand out!
- Santosh Bakery- Since 1968: This one is probably the only bakery in Pune where you clearly can see the wood fired oven directly from the selling counter. Famous for their Veg Pattice or Veg Puff, Santosh Bakery is always crowded with customers waiting for their turn. If you’re around Deccan or Apte road, Santosh Bakery is a must pit-stop for a fresh, quick and hot bite of their Veg Pattice!
- Kayani Bakery- Since 1955: Who doesn’t know of Kayani Bakery and their world-famous Shrewsbury Cookies made using Amul Butter. Legend says that they stopped making these cookies once because Amul Butter was short in supply across the nation. Such is their dedication towards their quality. Kayani’s breads are of sour dough nature and they have been making this way before sour dough became a thing! Choco-Walnut cake, Ginger biscuits, Brazilnut cookies, flavoured creamrolls, etc are also stars here at Kayani. Be ready to wait in long queues if you want to grab goodies from Kayani!
- Jadhav Bakers- Since 1990: At Jadhav Bakers located in Somwar Peth, we had the flakiest and the crunchiest Veg Pattice ever. The bakery is famous among the locals and is known for its pure vegetarian confectionary. This baking unit has gone an impressive makeover in the last few years and now they have chic cafe right above the bakery. Fresh breads, cookies and designer birthday cakes are the highlights at Jadhav Bakers in Somwar Peth, Pune.
- New Poona Bakery- Since 1967: Credited for being the very first Pure Vegetarian bakery of Pune, New Poona Bakery is a landmark institute in culinary heritage of Pune. for some reason that cannot be disclosed, Bread was first paired with Misal in 60s and New Poona Bakery was the reason behind it! In the recent years, patrons have popularized New Poona Bakery’s Veg Puffs and are widely available across various branches in Pune. New Poona Bakery is also credited for introducing hygiene in Pune’s bakery industry.
- The Royal Bakery And Confectionary- Since 1906: It is probably the oldest bakery and the finest too. There has been no change in the menu since 1906 and is their recipes too! The Royal Bakery And Confectionary is run by a Zoroastrian family and are famous for their peculiar Milk Bread. The timings and production of this baking unit is quite limited. You must reach on or before their opening time to grab some of their baked goodies.
- Persian Bakery- Since 1921: Iranian and Zoroastrian started the bakery culture in Pune and so it is imperative that this is one of the oldest baking unit going by its name! Their first original branch is located in Cantonment and 2nd branch was started by the enterprising young generation of the same family in Kalyani Nagar. We love their motto, “we knead your needs” and think you should try their jam tarts, pastry puffs (jam/cheese/chicken/veg), Danish pastry, their signature butter khari and lemon tarts!
- Hindustan Bakery- Since 1948: It is a prominent name in the old peth areas of Pune. With branches on Bajirao Road, Laxmi Road, Omkareshwar temple, etc it is household name for daily confectionaries and their signature Veg Puff! All their products are top-notch and are pure vegetarian too.
- Green Bakery- Since 1969: Their name itself suggests a hardcore vegetarian approach. This is quite a unique bakery considering their diverse offerings. Apart from top quality breads, kharis, puffs, etc; their Pure Wheat cookies and Maharashtrian snacks like Shankarpaale, varieties of Sev and Boondi make Green Bakery stand apart from the rest. Today, Green Bakery has multiple branches across Pune and always stock freshest produce!
