Having South Indian food is always a delight, but at Aahar Udipi, it’s an experience unlike any other. This is not just another south Indian restaurant. It is a space that doesn’t just serve south Indian food but transports you straight to a grand temple. With stone carved pillars, sacred symbols, and chandeliers inspired by temple chariots, it’s entirely an experience about warmth, purity and culture of Southern India.
Inspired by Southern Karnataka’s magnificent temples, Aahar Udipi’s design captures the purity and grandeur of these sacred places. Intricate nagas, towering grey stone walls and carved pillars, all represents the spiritual essence of the temple courtyard. Similar to the ancient shrines it replicates, the space is naturally cool and pure due to the use of laterite stone, which is abundant in the konkan region. The soil and clay from this stone are used in Kaavi-kale, a traditional art form found on the walls of Udipi’s Sri Krishna temple and various other households. However, it’s a dying art.
Above you, a warm and golden glow would be created by chandeliers which are inspired by Dakshin Karnataka’s Rathotsava. Shaped like the beautiful chariots that carry deities during the festivities, these chandeliers depict Garduda keeping watch over the restaurant. So basically, every aspect of the design here has a specific function. Beyond architecture, Aahar Udipi celebrates the rich art and culture of Southern India. The family area features masks and artifacts from Yakshagan, a lively folk theatre practice that combines dance, storytelling and elaborate costumes.
Temples have always been the hubs for celebration and gatherings where people come together to pray, share meals and sing together. This restaurant embodies this spirit by featuring paintings the festivities in the grand temples. It is to remind the guests that the food is more than just a meal. It is a sacred offering and a way to connect with community and our culture.
So, if you’re looking for more than just South Indian food, Aahar Udipi is the place to be. This is not just a restaurant, it is aahar udipi, where every meal is like a sacred offering and every visit like a celebration of heritage and culture. When are you visiting then?
