How would you like to try 100 % vegetarian chaap, a roll which will make your day and you will be asking for more? Then head to Punjabi Chaap Corner, a chain restaurant from Delhi and Toronto, now open at Balewadi. This 60 seater restaurant opened its doors to the public on 21st December’21 and has been an attraction of sorts for those who haven’t tried a soya chaap. Its owner Rahul Patil wanted to give the city a different food experience and hence this restaurant is dedicated to soya chaap.

This restaurant brand is known for its variety of dishes made with Delhi’s famous Soya Chaap. It is a famous street food to be found in Northern India and is rapidly gaining a fanbase in Pune too!. You can call it a vegetarian rendition of ‘lamb’ chaap, a classic dish from Mughlai style of cooking. People often call it mock chicken for its taste and the surface of the tandoor roasted soya chaap is similar to grilled meat and is high in protein as well.

Punjabi Chaap Corner being a pure veg multicuisine restaurant, one should not miss on the Soya Chaap variations. “It is all in the masalas and rubs on the soya chaps that make them the star of any dish,” said Rahul.

Each dish is flavourful and has enough punch to want to finish the servings which are good for two people. I started with the appetisers of which I tried Malai Chaap, a truly melt in the mouth, just as one would love a malai chicken tikka; soft, moist and perfectly chargrilled (230). Then the in-house favourite Chur Chur Chaap (Rs 220), truly exquisite house rub sprinkled over the tandoor roasted chaap. The Pudina Chaap and the Masala Stuffed Chaap (Rs 245) are also the scene stealers.

The soya chaps are also used in main gravies which you will end up licking your fingers. Do try the special Matka Dum Chaap or the Chaap Kheema Kaleji (don’t get caught in the name, for it is completely vegetarian using soya chaap as a mince and also as small pieces to look like meat). If you are a biryani fan and tired of the same old vegetable biryani, then I recommend trying the Dum Matka Chaap Biryani (Rs 300) which is oozing with aroma and flavours in every bite.

I usually don’t like to try vegetables in any form, but these soya chaap preparations made me think otherwise. This place is worth a visit again to try the soya chaap sizzler and other dishes on the menu.
