The best of homely snacks that are home-made by different women are brought to one place everyday in a tempo and sold fresh! This is Gurjari Mahila Udyog Kendra for you and by far the most unique business model in the food industry of Pune. And let us tell you, it has been running successfully for the past 25 years!
This is the power of good honest food and self-help groups proven by this oldest mobile food van parked on JM road every evening! Members of the Gurjari Mahila Udyog Kendra cook snacks like Surali Vadi, Kothimbir Vadi, Bajra Vadi, Dhokla, Batata Vada, Thalipeeth, Kachori, and Samosa in their houses. The Raskar couple who are a part of this self-help group stock up all the fresh food in the van and park it on JM road for the foodies.
Regulars who know what to expect throng everyday (the menu has surprises everyday!) and newbies just follow the crowd and delicious aroma. We visited this van for an evening snack but ended up gobbling so much. The homemade Gujarati and Maharashtrian snacks like Samosa, Kachori, Batata Vada and unique ones like Bajra Vadi are way too delicious and fresh! You smell good quality oil, mild spices, cleanliness and hygiene in all their products.
Starting at 5.30pm everyday, Raskar couple keep the van open until the food gets over. But usually, the food tends to get sold out very fast. Who doesn’t want a bite of fresh homemade snacks at chai-time! This van and the business model have successfully supported the needy women who can cook great but don’t have to bother about selling it.
Urbanly recommends all foodies of Pune to visit Gurjari Mahila Udyog Kendra food van for lip-smacking snacks and also support the unique small business run by women!
