Alright folks! Now that you know that Virasat Karigar Haat is about to grace the Monalisa Kalagram from 30th January to 3rd February, Let’s get into why this isn’t yet another weekend plan. We’re talking 30 National award winning Indian artists. (Yes 30!) They are bringing their award-winning handcrafted masterpieces such as clothing, jewellery, accessories and home decor straight to you so that you could shop and admire them. They are Padma honorees, National awardees and even a UNESCO awarded artist. They are bringing their centuries old craft to Pune. Now you know it’s a big deal. You can’t miss it.
Come, lets meet the legends behind the crafts:
- Prakash Joshi with Phad Painting from Rajasthan: A UNESCO and a National awardee, Prakash Joshi’s Phad paintings are what art with narrative looks like. He uses bold colors and intricate details to depict epic stories of historic legends and mythological tales of folk deities on canvas. Joshi’s work is keeping the tradition of this 700-year-old art form still alive. P.S: A lovely Phad painting would be a great addition to your living room. Make sure you get one!
- Raghav Rajsoni with Thewa Jewellery: If you’re into wearables then you’ll fall in love with Thewa Jewellery. The jewellery is handcrafted by Raghav Rajsoni who blends gold designs with colored glass to create regal looking and intricate ornaments. This 400-year-old jewellery craft is now an integral part of Rajput wedding traditions.
- Ramesh Makwana with Patola silk sarees: If textiles are your calling, then don’t miss Ramesh Makwana’s Patan Patola silk sarees from Gujarat. These sarees are a collector’s delight because of the intricate process of aligning hand tied and dyed warp and weft threads during weaving. Due to this meticulous process, these sarees take days to be made. These sarees are treasures and you’d definitely want one!
Adding even more to the cultural spectrum, artists like Santosh Dhanopiya with his Sanganeri prints and Lal Chand Chippa with his Bagru Block prints are a must see! Jonnalagadda Niranjan with his magnificent Kalamkari painting is not to be missed for sure. Ashraf Hassan with his handcrafted jutis and Rajendra Kumhar with his terracotta craft would be a delight to shop too!
