Palkhi started out as an e-commerce website that received a lot of success post pandemic. Padmaja Lakhe decided to grow this business and opened up a one stop destination store at Erandwane. The store offers handicrafts from almost 18-21 states of India. Palkhi is in direct contact with the local artists and pays them into their Jan Dhan Account as advised by the Govt of India. The products here start with as low as 20 Rupees and go up to as high as 28000.
While selecting the artists, Palkhi prefers women artisans who don’t have a platform to showcase their art and are holding themselves back due to their household chores. Palkhi carefully identifies such artisans and brings them into the picture with all the potential craft they have to offer. Showing one such handicraft, Diyas, which are baked in a furnace and are made of mud. These Diyas are hand painted by women before baking which makes the painting permanent. The handicrafts are made up of wood, metal, cloth and other raw materials.
The anganwadi system followed in Maharashtra is also followed in other states and goes by other names. Palkhi also contacts such groups to give their art a platform. Doing this, Palkhi has tried to bring all this art and collection of handicrafts under one roof. And Pune being the hub of culture, there couldn’t have been a better place to start with. If you too have a fond longing towards handicrafts and dying arts of India, then definitely give a visit to Palkhi!!
