Does reading this news make you happy? We bet it surely does! Just buying your stock of wine bottles along with the list of monthly groceries from your regular supermarket is another level of convenience, isn’t it? Or just a pint of your favourite shiraz or chardonnay is just a walk away from your home if you feel like sipping some after a tiring day! Let’s have a look at what the exact news says.
As per the decision by Maharashtra State cabinet yesterday, wine will be allowed to be sold in supermarkets and walk-in stores across Maharashtra. As per the chief minister’s office, a “shelf-in-shop” method will be adopted in supermarkets and walk-in-stores which have an area of 100 sq metre or more and are registered under the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments Act. But the supermarkets which are near places of worship or educational institutions can not sell wine.
Supermarkets will have to pay a fee of ₹5,000 for selling wine. This will allow winemakers to broaden their retail footprint.
The government will charge per bulk litre nominal excise duty of Rs 10 on all types of wine bottles. This will earn only Rs 5 crore revenue for the state but will help the excise administration know the amount of wine bottles sold in the market.
The current sale of 70 lakh litres per year in the state is expected to go up to 1 crore litres under the new liberalised policy for retail sale.
