Synopsis: The movie talks about female feticide in the 21st century Maharashtra and it derives its name from the chromosome ‘Y’ that decides on the gender of the unborn child.
Review: First and foremost kudos to Marathi cinema to upping the notch for cinematic excellence and how!!
The hard hitting fact of the movie is the fact that the society even today does not understand that the chromosome ‘Y’ is decided by the male while conceiving and the woman has no part in it. The protagonist grows up in patriarchal culture herself, stands up against all odds to bring to light a notorious entity who makes ‘abortion’ a regular operation. She proves her point to the society and the government alike. She understands the pain even more because she is a mother of a girl herself.
The theme of the movie might not feel new, the dialogues and a particular scenes in the movie break your heart. The background score complements the lack of dialogues at all the places. The fact that women are not safe anywhere, not even in their mother’s womb is numbing.
Mukta Barve has done an amazing job least to say. The mother-daughter relationship is a fresh breath of air compared to the rather heavy movie. It is Nandu Madhav who steals the show. He’s come a far way to act the calm villain from his usual roles. Prajakta Mali, Sandeep Pathak and Suhas Shirsat do a well commendable job in the movie. All the characters only add to the movie’s effect.
While the hyperlinked stories especially before the interval might confuse the audience. The message hits the nail. I hope the audience comes out of the theatre realising that we still live in a generation which believes in these practices and start questioning them. Hopefully a change arises soon.
Three and a half stars for the movie and a complete thumbs up for the background score which is still reverberating in the head today.
