Sridevi Prasanna- Marathi Movie Review

I have been dying to watch old-school rom coms back again in Marathi cinema. Films like ‘Chi Va Chi Sau Ka’ and ‘Mumbai Pune Mumbai’ have earned a place in audience’s heart over the years. After watching the trailer of Sridevi Prasanna, this is exactly what I expected – a full of heart romcom but it isn’t the case.

What starts as a unique story turns out to be a Jeevansathi advertisement blown out of proportion. The leads try their best to keep it entertaining but the writing just doesn’t support them. Even though the story feels very interesting on paper, the execution is a bit messy.

The film starts in Vengurla and Mumbai simultaneously showing us the respective families of Sridevi (Sai Tamhankar) and Prasanna (Siddhant Chandekar). On one hand, Sridevi comes from a whacky old school Bollywood drama family which has a tradition of love marriages over generations. They are behind Sri’s life to fall in love and get married soon. On the other hand, we see Prasanna’s family that just wants him to get married before he gets too old (bald). They keep searching rishtas everywhere but nothing works out.

Both Sri and Prasanna decide to try Jeevansathi, a matrimonial site, and check their luck. After a lot of digging, both strike gold in the form of each other. Prasanna only swipes right because of Sridevi’s interesting name and Sridevi only swipes right because of Prasanna’s long list of traits he is looking for in a girl. Both end up meeting each other and then starts a not so romantic yet sweet love story of SRIDEVI PRASANNA.

Film starts with a lot of comic gags and fast paced narrative but then gets lost with the subjects eventually. The back to back songs expose the lack of depth in characters and scriptwriting too. As the template goes, it even fails to generate any emotional highs towards the interval or at the climax. The direction is pretty average too. The old school rom coms need a fast pace, otherwise even 2 hours feel like 20.

The performances by Sai and Siddharth are the core of this film. If not for their charm, Sridevi Prasanna would have been a complete dud. The supporting cast has a few known faces but all of them are underutilized. The cinematography, particularly in Goa, could have been refreshing but isn’t. The background music is tacky and upbeat. The songs don’t work and the remake of Dekha Jo Tujhe Yaar Dil Mein Baji Guitar feels unnecessary.

To sum it up, the film has an interesting story but it just doesn’t hit the high of comedy and emotions, which is needed for it to work well. Sridevi Prasanna starts with a bang and turns into a matrimony ad by the end.
