Punekars are in for a unique musical treat with Mumbai’s leading theatre company presenting their new production Same Same But Different in Pune on Friday December 10, 2021 at Bharat Natya Mandir at 6.30 pm.
The play, Same Same But Different, directed by Sapan Saran, is about two talented performers from different backgrounds, different life experiences, facing different artistic and social challenges, yet bound together by their love for music, come together to share their life stories with searing honesty, humour and emotion.
Bringing the stage alive are well-known singer-actress Jahnvi Shrimankar, and well-known actor-singer Kailash Waghmare telling their stories they share music from different traditions such as folk, classical, popular cinema, political, as they sing live, accompanied by a highly skilled band.
The premise of the play is of two different individuals where the girl is from a large joint family in South Mumbai, while the boy is from a family of marginal farmers in Maharashtra’s Jalna district. Her grandmother introduced her to the nuances of Dadra and Dhrupad through the Haveli Sangeet. He taught himself to sing perched on a Neem tree while grazing cattle in the vast open grounds outside his village.
“Tamaasha Theatre is known for pushing the boundaries of theatre while engaging with the world around us, we are known in Mumbai as a curated performing arts space that presents contemporary work in an intimate setting,” said Sapan Saran, who is the co-founder of the Tamaasha Theatre with theatre director Sunil Shanbag in 2014.
