Review

Mahesh Limaye returns to the big screen with a slice of life romantic comedy ‘Jaggu Ani Juliet’. The film feels inspired by many Shakespearean love stories on its surface and also has many references of him in it.

As the title suggests, this is the love story of Jaggu (Ameya Wagh) and Juliet (Vaidehi Parashurami). Set in the heart of Uttarakhand’s Himalayan mountains, the film starts off with a quirky narration of the tour guide played by Hrishikesh Joshi. As he introduces all the characters touring with him and also their reasons for coming to this tour. The one guy who gets his attention right away is the King Of Versova, Jaggu, from Koliwada. Full of heart, joy and always missing his father(Upendra Limaye), Jaggu is here with a challenge to find a girlfriend in the 5 days of the tour. Then he meets Juliet, a solo travel freak from LA, in the weirdest way possible. Juliet who is on the tour to blow off the steam from her constant fights with her father gets a sigh of relief after meeting such a jolly Jaggu. Juliet’s preset rules of life and dating is something Jaggu takes on as a challenge.  They start roaming around, sharing rooms, sharing their past and even their dreams. The love story takes off but Juliet has a no strings attached rule which becomes the biggest thorn in Jaggu’s way. But love has the power to face all fears, and so does Jaggu. Will this Romeo’s love for Juliet be enough for her to stay with him is what the rest of the film is about. Juliet’s problems with her father constantly come in the way of Jaggu.

A very straightforward script sprinkled with a lot of characters played by some of the best actors from the marathi industry. But somehow most of them feel underutilised. The limelight of the film is definitely Amey Wagh. His Koli accent and weird jokes will make you laugh till your stomach aches. Every dialogue that comes out of his mouth will make you laugh. Vaidehi Parshurami plays Juliet like a feather flowing with the wind with Amey Wagh. Her accent is definitely kiddish but won’t bother you much. Other star cast doesn’t have much screen time but Pravin Tarde’s limited presence is outright hilarious.

The cinematography is really breathtaking and so are the breezy locations. This is one of the weakest musicals Ajay-Ajul has ever worked on. The songs are also placed at wrong times in the film which makes them ever worse. The background music also isn’t that great. The screenplay especially in the first half is dragged a lot and the long runtime dries the film out from time to time.

Overall, Jaggu Ani Juliet is an average rom-com with the same outdated theories and tricks of love. It is definitely hilarious and won’t disappoint. Don’t keep high expectations from the film and Amey Wagh will make you fall in love with him.
