The Love story of Dhondi and Champya, both buffaloes, which runs parallely with their owners’ love-hate relationship.
Review:
Written and Directed by Dnyanesh Bhalekar, Dhondi Champya: Ek Prem Katha is a no brainer quirky comedy which brings back the stalwart of Marathi comedy Bharat Jadhav and pairing him up with Vaibhav Mangle, another king of comedy in the last decade.
The film starts with Umaji’s (Vaibhav Mangale) buffalo Champya getting impregnated by Ankush’s (Bharat Jadhav) buffalo Dhondi. Then starts the love hate relationship between the farmers if the two buffaloes can mate again. There is a parallel arc where a love story is blooming between the farmer’s kids as well. Ankush’s son Aditya falls in love with Umaji’s daughter Ovi. The situation gets entangled and takes a quirky route moving forward.
Seeing Bharat Jadhav on the big screen after a long break makes your heart feel warm but will leave you with an unsatisfactory taste as he doesn’t carry the same charm he had years back. Vaibhav Mangale, our very own Shakaal, does nothing new but you love him for this tonality. Other star cast doesn’t have much to do but they play their parts well.
The story is a complete ‘leave your brains at home’ kind and please don’t look into it as anything more than a senseless comedy. The short runtime works in the film’s favour and doesn’t let you feel bored. A few more situtational jokes could have made the movie more enjoyable. This format of improvisational comedy is picking up in Marathi cinema and Dhondi Champya might just have made a small place for itself here. If you have time to kill, this one won’t disappoint.
