Review:
Marathi Cinema has definitely made noise for itself by experimenting with the traditional template of cinema from time to time. This time around, it’s Pradnyesh Kadam who has picked up the mantle of trying something new. ‘Gadad Andhaar’ is touted as the first Marathi underwater supernatural thriller and well, it almost lives upto the expectations.
The film starts with the four young scientists and scuba divers, Rajiv (Jay Dudhane), Chinmayee (Neha Mahajan) along with two others diving in deep waters for a routine checkup on behalf of the Marine Biotechnology and Research Organization. As they are diving along in the dark waters which in itself is a mystery place, Chinmayee is left alone and loses the crew. The crew comes back to the deck after giving up the search.
When Chinmayee manages to come back, Rajiv suspects something to be off about her. Chinmayee has encountered a spirit in the deep and may have just brought it back with her. Then starts the mystery of finding out whose spirit it is.
The underwater sequences are really intriguing and daring for a low budget film. The part after that they arrive on the land is where the film falters and is quite weak in its execution. Neha Mahajan and Jay Dudhane’s chemistry goes on and off at times. The story is predictable but the background score makes it enthralling.
A little bit of work on the screenplay and other parts of the story could have really upped the ante for this experimental thriller. Yet kudos to the team for attempting this. Gadad Andhaar is shot beautifully underwater but is lame and dry on land.
